AI Story Generator
Turn an idea into an original short story with a clear beginning, middle and end. Choose a genre — adventure, mystery, sci-fi, fantasy, romance, comedy or horror — and a length, then read or copy your story. Perfect for fun, inspiration and beating writer's block.

How to generate a short story
- Type your story idea in the box. The counter under it shows your use of the 600-character allowance (about 100 words) and turns red past that point, so lead with the character, what they want and what stands in the way.
- Pick a genre from the eight on offer, or leave it on Any, and choose Short, Medium or Long.
- Click Write story. A Long story can take 15 seconds or so, and the whole text appears at once.
- Read it in the result box and Copy it. Clicking Write story again with the same idea gives a different story.
How your idea becomes the request
The server turns your choices into one line, for example 'Write a mystery short story (about 450 words) based on this idea:' followed by your text. With the genre on Any, the genre word is simply left out. A fixed system instruction asks for a clear beginning, middle and end, vivid but concise prose, content suitable for a general audience, and a reply in the same language as your prompt.
The story task runs at one of the highest creativity settings on this site (a temperature of 0.95, second only to the business name generator), which is why two runs of the same prompt can end up with different characters, settings and endings. That is useful when you want options and unhelpful when you want a specific scene, so put anything you need kept into the prompt itself.
Lengths and what they are good for
The target is a request, not a hard limit: expect the model to land within 20 percent either side. Nothing longer than Long is available, so a 2,000-word story has to be built from separate runs.
| Setting | Target length | Read aloud (150 wpm) | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short | about 200 words | 1.5 minutes | Flash fiction, a bedtime micro-story, a writing-prompt warm-up |
| Medium | about 450 words | 3 minutes | A complete scene with a turn, a classroom example, a newsletter piece |
| Long | about 800 words | 5.5 minutes | A story with two or three scenes and a small subplot |
Prompts that produce better stories
- Name the characters if you want particular names; otherwise the model invents its own.
- Say the point of view and tense if it matters, such as 'first person, present tense'. The model generally follows this.
- State the ending you want, or say 'ambiguous ending', if you have one in mind.
- Write the prompt in the language you want the story in.
| Thin prompt | Fuller prompt | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| a story about a dog | a retired police dog smells smoke at night but cannot wake his sleeping owner | Character, goal and obstacle in one line |
| sci-fi adventure | a cargo pilot on Europa has 20 minutes of air and a passenger lying about why she is aboard | A clock and a secret give the model a shape |
| a love story | two rival food-truck owners forced to share one generator during a blackout | Setting creates the conflict and the humour |
What each genre pulls toward
| Genre | Typical shape of the result |
|---|---|
| Adventure | A journey, physical stakes, forward momentum |
| Mystery | A question posed early, a few clues, a reveal near the end |
| Sci-fi | A speculative setting or technology that drives the plot |
| Fantasy | Magic or myth with its own rules |
| Romance | Two people, tension between them, an emotional resolution |
| Comedy | Escalating misunderstandings and a punchline ending |
| Horror | Dread and suggestion rather than gore, because of the general-audience rule |
| Any | Whatever your prompt implies |
Limits worth knowing
- The general-audience instruction means explicit violence or sexual content will be softened or declined.
- There is no memory between runs. To continue a story, paste a summary of the earlier part as the prompt, within the 600 characters.
- Stories are not saved anywhere: the text is sent to a Groq-hosted model, the reply is shown, and neither is stored by us.
- The site allows 12 AI requests per minute per address, which a story session rarely reaches.
Frequently asked questions
What kinds of stories can it write?
Pick a genre — adventure, mystery, sci-fi, fantasy, romance, comedy or horror (or Any) — and a length, and it writes an original short story from your prompt.
Are the stories original?
Yes, each story is generated fresh from your prompt. It's a creative aid — feel free to edit and build on it.
Is it free?
Yes, free with no account. Very frequent requests are briefly rate-limited.
Can it write stories for young children?
Yes. Put the age in the prompt, for example 'for a five-year-old, simple words, gentle ending', and choose Short. The model adapts vocabulary and avoids anything frightening.
Can it continue a story I already started?
Only through the prompt. Summarise what has happened so far and say 'continue from here' in under 600 characters; the model has no access to previous runs.
Why is my Long story shorter than 800 words?
Length is an approximate request to the model. If it comes up short, run it again or ask for 'three scenes' in the prompt, which tends to stretch the result.
Who owns the story?
We claim no rights over what you generate and keep no copy of it. Whether AI-written text can be copyrighted at all varies by country, so check before relying on it commercially.
