Dice Roller
Roll virtual dice online: choose how many dice and how many sides (d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20), then roll to see each result, the total, and a history of recent rolls. Great for board games, tabletop RPGs and the classroom.
How to roll dice online
- Choose Number of dice from 1 to 10 in the first dropdown. It starts at 2.
- Choose Sides per die: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12 or d20. It starts at d6.
- Click Roll dice. The faces flicker for about half a second while the button reads 'Rolling…', then settle on the final result.
- Read each die, the Total underneath, and the Recent rolls list, which keeps your last eight rolls in the form '2d6: 3, 5 = 8'.
How a roll is decided
Each die is computed as 1 + floor(Math.random() × sides), so every face from 1 to the number of sides is equally likely and the dice are independent of each other. The final result is calculated the instant you click; the nine flickering frames that follow, redrawn every 60 ms, are new throwaway rolls shown purely for effect, and the real result is revealed when they stop. Six-sided dice are drawn with pip glyphs (⚀ to ⚅); every other die shows its number.
Math.random is the browser's fast pseudo-random generator (xorshift128+ in Chrome, Firefox and Safari), not the cryptographic generator. It is unpredictable enough for any board game or role-playing session; it is not something to settle bets with real money on.
Odds for the total of two six-sided dice
Seven turns up almost one roll in six, while a double six or double one arrives once every 36 rolls on average. The more dice you add, the more the totals bunch up around the middle; with 3d6 the extremes of 3 and 18 each have a 1 in 216 chance.
| Total | Ways out of 36 | Probability |
|---|---|---|
| 2 or 12 | 1 | 2.8% |
| 3 or 11 | 2 | 5.6% |
| 4 or 10 | 3 | 8.3% |
| 5 or 9 | 4 | 11.1% |
| 6 or 8 | 5 | 13.9% |
| 7 | 6 | 16.7% |
Average and range for each combination
The average of N dice with S sides is N × (S + 1) / 2, and the Total shown by the tool will hover around that figure over many rolls.
| Roll | Lowest total | Highest total | Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1d4 | 1 | 4 | 2.5 |
| 1d6 | 1 | 6 | 3.5 |
| 1d8 | 1 | 8 | 4.5 |
| 1d10 | 1 | 10 | 5.5 |
| 1d12 | 1 | 12 | 6.5 |
| 1d20 | 1 | 20 | 10.5 |
| 3d6 | 3 | 18 | 10.5 |
| 10d20 | 10 | 200 | 105 |
Using it at the game table
- d20 checks: every face has a 5% chance, so a natural 20 comes up once in twenty attempts. For advantage, roll 2 dice and keep the higher yourself; the chance of at least one 20 is then 9.75%.
- Percentile rolls: there is no d100, so roll 1d10 twice and read the first as tens (10 meaning 0) and the second as ones.
- Modifiers: the tool adds no bonus. Add your +3 to the Total by hand.
- Mixed dice such as 2d6 + 1d8 need two separate rolls; the history keeps both lines so you can add them.
- Character stats with 3d6: set 3 dice and d6, roll six times, and read the six totals straight from Recent rolls.
What the roller leaves out
- No d2, d3 or d100 options, and the d10 shows 1 to 10 rather than 0 to 9.
- No drop-lowest, reroll or exploding-dice rules.
- The history holds only the last eight rolls and is cleared when you reload the page.
- Clicking Roll dice during the half-second animation does nothing; wait for the result to settle.
Frequently asked questions
What dice can I roll?
You can roll from 1 to 10 dice at once, each with 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 or 20 sides — covering everything from a standard board game to tabletop RPGs.
Are the rolls random and fair?
Yes. Each die is rolled independently using your browser's random number generator, so every face is equally likely.
Does it show the total?
Yes. It shows each individual die, the combined total, and a short history of your recent rolls.
Can I add a modifier such as +3 to the total?
Not within the tool. Roll, then add the modifier to the Total shown. The history line records the unmodified dice so you can check the sum later.
How do I roll percentile (d100) dice?
Select 1 die and d10, roll twice, and combine the two results as tens and ones, treating 10 as 0. A 4 then a 7 reads as 47; a 10 then a 10 reads as 00, which is 100.
How many past rolls does the history keep?
Eight, newest first, each listed as the dice rolled, the individual results and their sum. Older entries drop off and the list is cleared on reload.
Are the flickering numbers during the animation real rolls?
They are genuine random rolls, but they are discarded. The result you keep is computed once, before the animation starts, and is shown when the flicker stops.
