How to Calculate the Average

The average, or mean, tells you the typical value in a set of numbers. It's quick to work out, and the calculator below also gives the median and mode.

The formula

  • Add up all the numbers to get the total (sum).
  • Count how many numbers there are.
  • Divide the sum by the count.

Worked example

For 10, 20 and 30: the sum is 60 and there are 3 numbers, so the average is 60 ÷ 3 = 20.

The mean can be pulled up or down by very large or small values; that's why the median (middle value) is sometimes a fairer “typical” figure.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate the average?

Add all the numbers, then divide by how many there are. For 10, 20, 30: 60 ÷ 3 = 20.

What's the difference between mean and median?

The mean is the sum divided by the count; the median is the middle value when the numbers are sorted. The median is less affected by outliers.

Can the calculator find the median and mode too?

Yes — the calculator above shows the mean, median, mode, range and more.
