Hours Calculator
How to Calculate Hours Worked
To work out hours worked, find the time between clock-in and clock-out, then subtract breaks. The calculator below does it instantly, including overnight shifts.
Calculate hours worked
Overnight shifts are supported — if the end time is earlier than the start, it's counted as crossing midnight.
The method
- Subtract the start time from the end time to get the total span.
- Subtract any unpaid break time.
- Convert the result to decimal hours if payroll needs it (30 minutes = 0.5).
Decimal hours for payroll
Payroll usually wants hours as a decimal, not hours and minutes. Divide the minutes by 60: 7 hours 30 minutes becomes 7.5 hours.
For a shift that crosses midnight, count the time after midnight as part of the same shift — the calculator handles this automatically.
