How to Convert Currency

Converting currency means multiplying an amount by the exchange rate between the two currencies. The converter below uses live daily rates, and here's how it works.

Convert currency

The method

  • Find the exchange rate from your currency to the target currency.
  • Multiply your amount by that rate.
  • To go the other way, divide instead of multiply.

Worked example

If 1 USD = 0.90 EUR, then 100 USD = 100 × 0.90 = 90 EUR.

Banks and apps add a margin to the mid-market rate, so the amount you actually receive is usually a little less than the pure conversion.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert one currency to another?

Multiply the amount by the exchange rate. For 100 USD at 0.90 EUR per USD: 100 × 0.90 = 90 EUR.

Are the rates live?

The converter above uses free daily exchange rates and shows when they were last updated.

Why is the bank's amount different?

Banks and payment services add a margin to the mid-market rate, so their figure differs slightly from a pure conversion.
