How to Write Numbers in Words

Writing numbers in words matters on cheques, contracts and forms. The rules are simple once you see them, and the tool below spells out any number for you.

The rules

  • Group digits in threes and name each group: thousands, millions, and so on.
  • Hyphenate compound numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine.
  • Use “and” for the decimal/cents part on cheques (e.g. “one hundred and 50/100”).

Examples

1,234 is “one thousand two hundred thirty-four”. 2,024 is “two thousand twenty-four”.

On a cheque, $105.50 is often written “one hundred five and 50/100”.
