The rules
- Group digits in threes and name each group: thousands, millions, and so on.
- Hyphenate compound numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine.
- Use “and” for the decimal/cents part on cheques (e.g. “one hundred and 50/100”).
Examples
1,234 is “one thousand two hundred thirty-four”. 2,024 is “two thousand twenty-four”.
On a cheque, $105.50 is often written “one hundred five and 50/100”.
