Pages are rendered at twice PDF's base scale of 72 points per inch — effectively 144 DPI — and saved as JPG at 92% quality. That's sharp on screens, including high-density phone and laptop displays, and keeps text crisp when someone zooms in a little.

For professional printing at 300 DPI or more, export images from the application that created the PDF, or use desktop software that lets you choose the resolution.

Rendering pages vs extracting images

This tool captures whole pages: the result is exactly what you see on screen, text and layout included. If you want the original photos embedded inside a PDF — from a product brochure, say — rendering gives you each photo at page resolution, framed by whatever surrounds it. Desktop PDF editors can extract embedded images at their stored resolution when you need that instead.

• Posting a page of a report, menu or flyer to social media or a chat, where PDFs don't preview.
• Adding a document page to a slide deck or website as a picture.
• Submitting to upload forms that only accept image files.

JPG or PNG for PDF pages?

JPG is the practical choice for most documents: it keeps files small, and at 92% quality text stays clean. Its weakness is sharp edges on flat colour — very fine lines in technical drawings, or tiny text on a coloured background, can show faint speckling when you zoom in closely. For pages like those, export PNG images from the application that created the PDF, or from a desktop PDF viewer that offers PNG export.
