How to calculate a discount

Multiply the price by the discount and divide by 100 to find the saving, then subtract it: sale price = price × (1 − discount ÷ 100).

Example: 25% off an 80 item saves 20, so you pay 60.

Stacked discounts don't simply add up

An extra 10% off on top of 20% off is not 30% off. The second discount applies to the already-reduced price: 100 → 80 → 72, which is a 28% total saving, not 30%.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate 25% off a price?

Multiply the price by 0.25 to get the saving, then subtract it. 25% off 80 is 80 − 20 = 60.

How do I work out two stacked discounts?

Apply them one after the other, not added together. 20% then 10% off 100 gives 80, then 72 — a 28% total discount.
