Every unit is a length unit squared

The base unit is the square meter, and each factor is the square of a length factor or a defined multiple of one. A foot is 0.3048 m, so a square foot is 0.3048² = 0.09290304 m². The most common mistake with area is applying the linear factor: 10 ft is 3.048 m, but 10 ft² is 0.929 m², not 3.048 m².

Worked conversions

Land units: acres, hectares and square miles

The acre began as the strip a team of oxen could plough in a day, one chain (66 ft) by one furlong (660 ft), which is why it is 43,560 ft² rather than a round number. The hectare is the metric counterpart: a square 100 m on each side, so there are 100 of them in a square kilometer. A square mile is 640 acres or about 2.59 km², the basis of the US survey section.

Regional land units are not included: the are (100 m²), dunam (1,000 m²), rood, bigha, rai, marla, guntha, tsubo and ping all have to be expressed in square meters or hectares before using the tool.

Reading the rounded output

Results at or above 100 are shown with two decimals: 1 mi² is 2,589,988.11 m².
Results between 1 and 100 get four decimals, as in 2.4711 acres per hectare.
Results under 1 get six decimals: 1 cm² is 0.001076 ft².
Below 0.0000005 the display shows 0 — 1 mm² in square kilometers (0.000000000001) is one such case. Convert 1,000,000 mm² instead and shift the decimal point.

Shortcuts within one measurement system

Inside the metric list every step is a power of ten and inside the imperial list the ratios are whole numbers, so many conversions can be checked mentally before trusting the screen.

mm² to cm²: divide by 100. cm² to m²: divide by 10,000. m² to hectares: divide by 10,000 again. Hectares to km²: divide by 100.
ft² to yd²: divide by 9. Acres to ft²: multiply by 43,560. Acres to mi²: divide by 640.
Crossing systems always needs the 0.09290304 factor or one of its multiples, which is where the tool saves time.

How many acres are in a hectare?

One hectare equals about 2.471 acres. One acre is about 0.4047 hectares.

Can I convert room dimensions like 12 ft × 10 ft directly?

Multiply the sides first to get an area, then convert it: 12 × 10 = 120 ft², and 120 × 0.09290304 = 11.1484 m². The tool only converts areas, not lengths.

Is a hectare the same as a square hectometer?

Yes. A hectometer is 100 m, so a square hectometer is 10,000 m², exactly one hectare.

Why is the dunam or the are missing?

They are not in the dropdowns. A dunam is 1,000 m² (0.1 ha) and an are is 100 m², so enter those square-meter values to convert them.

How exact are the imperial area factors?
