How to convert a weight

  1. Enter the mass you want to convert; the box starts at 1 with kilograms selected.
  2. Open the From dropdown if your figure is in milligrams, grams, metric tons, ounces, pounds or stone.
  3. The To column defaults to pounds; change it to any of the seven units and the bold figure updates immediately.
  4. Use the arrows button to flip kg → lb into lb → kg, or any other pair, in one click.
  5. Below the result, a table lists the same mass in every unit so you can copy more than one.

Seven units, one base: the gram

All seven options are mass units that the widget expresses in grams before converting. The avoirdupois pound has been defined as exactly 0.45359237 kg since 1959, the ounce is one sixteenth of that pound, and the stone is fourteen pounds. The entry labelled Metric tons is the tonne of 1,000 kg; the US short ton (907.18 kg) and the British long ton (1,016.05 kg) are not in the list.

Worked examples with the exact factors

  • 2.5 t to pounds: 2.5 × 1,000,000 = 2,500,000 g, and 2,500,000 ÷ 453.59237 = 5,511.5566, shown as 5,511.56.
  • 500 mg to ounces: 0.5 g ÷ 28.349523125 = 0.017637 oz.
  • 75 kg to stone: 75,000 g ÷ 6,350.29318 = 11.8105 st.
  • A 23 kg airline baggage allowance is 50.7063 lb; a 20 kg gym plate is 44.0925 lb.

Stone comes out as a decimal

British body weights are usually spoken as stone and pounds, but this tool gives decimal stone only. To split 11.8105 st, keep the 11 and multiply the remainder by 14: 0.8105 × 14 = 11.35, so 11 st 11.3 lb. Pounds and ounces work the same way with a factor of 16: 0.56 lb × 16 = 8.96 oz.

If you mainly need the stone-and-pounds form, the kg to stone guide linked from this page lists common body weights already split.

What the rounding rules mean for small masses

  • Values of 100 or more are printed with two decimals, values from 1 to 100 with four, and values under 1 with six, so 1 lb appears as 0.453592 kg even though the stored factor is 0.45359237.
  • A result below 0.0000005 is printed as 0: one milligram in metric tons is 0.000000001, which the table cannot show. Scale the input up (1,000 mg) and shift the decimal point.
  • Large results get digit grouping from your browser locale, so 1 t in grams reads 1,000,000 or 1.000.000 depending on your language settings.

Mass rather than force

Everything here is a unit of mass, which is what a kitchen or bathroom scale reports under normal gravity. The converter does not handle force units such as newtons or pound-force, and it does not know about troy ounces (31.1035 g), which are used for precious metals and are about 10% heavier than the avoirdupois ounce in the list.

Typical reasons to open this converter

  • Checking a recipe written in ounces against metric kitchen scales (4 oz = 113.3981 g).
  • Comparing shipping quotes where one carrier bills per kg and another per lb.
  • Reading medication doses: 0.25 g is 250 mg, and the table shows both at once.
  • Logging a weight change across units, since the table keeps kg, lb and st side by side.
