How to convert a volume
- Key in the volume; the From field begins at 1 liter.
- Switch the From unit when your figure is in milliliters, cubic meters, US fluid ounces, cups, pints, quarts or either gallon.
- The result box shows US gallons by default — choose a different To unit if needed.
- Check the full table beneath for all nine units, with the chosen one highlighted.
- Tap the double-arrow button to go the other way, for example gallons back to liters.
Nine volume units, all based on the liter
The liter is the base unit. The US customary units descend from the US gallon of exactly 231 cubic inches (3.785411784 L): a fluid ounce is 1/128 of it, a cup is 8 fl oz, a pint 16 and a quart 32. The imperial gallon was fixed at exactly 4.54609 L by the UK Weights and Measures Act 1985.

Liter value and definition of each unit.
US customary versus imperial
Only the gallon has an imperial entry. The fl oz, cup, pint and quart options are the US versions; the imperial pint (568.26 mL) and imperial fluid ounce (28.4131 mL) are not selectable, so a British recipe or beer measure needs a manual adjustment. One imperial gallon is 1.2009 US gallons: 20 imperial gallons is 20 × 4.54609 = 90.9218 L, and 90.9218 ÷ 3.785411784 = 24.019 US gallons.
Example conversions
- A 750 mL wine bottle: 0.75 L ÷ 0.0295735295625 = 25.3605 US fl oz.
- One cubic meter of water: 1,000 L ÷ 3.785411784 = 264.17 US gallons (two decimals because the result is over 100).
- A 2 L soda bottle: 2 ÷ 3.785411784 = 0.528344 gal (six decimals because the result is under 1).
- A 200 L aquarium is 52.8344 US gallons or 43.9938 imperial gallons.
Precision you will see on screen
The widget prints two decimals for results of 100 or more, four between 1 and 100 and six below 1, then drops trailing zeros. One fluid ounce in cubic meters is 0.0000295735, which rounds to 0.00003 on screen; one milliliter in cubic meters shows as 0.000001; anything smaller than 0.0000005 prints as 0. For tiny volumes, convert a thousand times the amount and move the decimal point.
Fuel, drinks and tanks
- A 50 L car fuel tank holds 13.2086 US gallons or 10.9985 imperial gallons, which matters when comparing fuel prices abroad.
- A 12 fl oz soda can is 354.88 mL; a 5-gallon water-cooler bottle is 18.9271 L.
- A 20 L jerry can is 4.3994 imperial gallons, and one US gallon of water weighs roughly 3.785 kg because a liter of water is close to a kilogram.
- Pool and hot-tub volumes quoted in cubic meters convert to gallons for chemical dosing: 10 m³ is 2,641.72 US gallons.
Units that are not in the list
- Tablespoons and teaspoons: a US tablespoon is half a fluid ounce (14.7868 mL) and a teaspoon a sixth (4.9289 mL), so multiply the fl oz result by 2 or 6.
- The 250 mL metric cup used in Australia and much of Europe; the US cup here is 236.59 mL, about 5.7% smaller.
- Cubic feet, cubic inches, barrels and the imperial pint or quart.
- Dry measures such as the US dry pint and bushel, which differ from the liquid units offered.
Frequently asked questions
How many liters are in a US gallon?
One US gallon equals about 3.785 liters. One imperial (UK) gallon is larger, at about 4.546 liters.
How many milliliters are in a cup?
A US cup is about 236.6 milliliters. This converter uses US measures for cups, pints, quarts and fluid ounces.
Does the converter include imperial pints and fluid ounces?
No. Only the imperial gallon is offered; cups, pints, quarts and fluid ounces are US measures. An imperial pint is 568.26 mL, so divide a milliliter figure by 568.26 by hand if you need it.
Is a cubic meter exactly 1,000 liters?
Yes. Since 1964 the liter has been defined as one cubic decimeter, so 1 m³ is exactly 1,000 L and the factor in the tool is exact.
Why are American and British gallons different?
The US kept the old English wine gallon of 231 cubic inches, while Britain redefined its gallon in 1824 as the volume of 10 pounds of water, later fixed at 4.54609 L. The imperial gallon is therefore about 20% larger.
How can I convert tablespoons with this tool?
Convert to US fluid ounces and double the figure: 30 mL is 1.0144 fl oz, which is about 2.03 US tablespoons.
