How to convert kilograms to pounds

One kilogram equals about 2.20462 pounds, so multiply kilograms by 2.205 to get pounds.

Example: a 70 kg person weighs 70 × 2.205 = 154.3 lb, and a 23 kg checked bag is about 50.7 lb.

The double-and-add-10% shortcut

Doubling a kilogram figure and adding ten percent lands within a tenth of a percent of the real answer, because 2.2 is only slightly under the true 2.20462.

For 70 kg: double to 140, add 14, giving 154 lb against the exact 154.3 lb. For 85 kg: 170 + 17 = 187 lb, against 187.4 lb. The shortcut is accurate enough for any everyday purpose and easy to do while standing at a check-in desk.

Kilograms in stones and pounds

British body weight is usually given in stones, where one stone is 14 pounds. Convert to pounds first, then divide by 14 — the whole number is stones and the remainder is pounds.

Luggage and gym weights

  • A 23 kg checked-bag allowance is 50.7 lb — which is why US airlines quote it as a 50 lb limit.
  • The heavier 32 kg limit is 70.5 lb, generally the maximum a single bag may weigh for handling reasons.
  • Carry-on limits of 7 kg and 10 kg are 15.4 lb and 22 lb.
  • An Olympic barbell is 20 kg, or 44 lb; the common American bar is 45 lb, which is 20.4 kg.
  • A 20 kg plate is 44 lb and a 25 kg plate is 55 lb, so a metric and an imperial gym never quite line up.

Tracking a weight change across units

Converting a single weight is easy; converting a change is where people slip. A loss of 5 kg is a loss of 11 lb, but a target weight is not simply your current pounds minus a converted number unless you convert both the start and the goal from the same unit.

The safest habit is to pick one unit and keep every number in it, converting only for display. Scales that switch units mid-way through a month of weigh-ins are a common reason a tracking chart shows a jump that never happened.

Recipes and food labels

Food weights convert the same way, but the useful anchors are smaller. A pound of flour is 454 grams, half a kilo is 1.1 lb, and 100 grams is 3.5 ounces — worth memorising if you cook from recipes written on both sides of the Atlantic.

Note that ounces on a food label are a weight, while fluid ounces in a drink recipe are a volume. They are different units that share a name, and swapping one for the other is the single most common conversion mistake in cooking.

Pounds, kilograms and what they measure

Since 1959 the pound has been defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, so like the inch it is pinned to the metric system by definition rather than by measurement. The reciprocal of that number gives the 2.20462262 pounds per kilogram used here.

Strictly, both units measure mass rather than weight — the force gravity exerts. It makes no practical difference on Earth, which is why scales are labelled in kilograms and pounds interchangeably.
