How to count characters with and without spaces
- Paste or type into the Your text box. The four figures below it refresh as you type.
- Use With spaces (highlighted) for limits that count every keystroke, such as form fields and social bios.
- Use Without spaces when a limit or assignment explicitly excludes spaces.
- Check Words and Lines if the same text also has to fit a word or line budget.
What each of the four counts includes
Punctuation is never removed from either character total: the comma, the exclamation mark and the question mark in the example are three of the 22 non-space characters.
| Count | Rule | 'Hello, world! How are you?' |
|---|---|---|
| With spaces | Every character in the box: letters, digits, punctuation, spaces, tabs and line breaks | 26 |
| Without spaces | The same, minus every space, tab and line break | 22 |
| Words | Pieces between runs of whitespace, after trimming the ends | 5 |
| Lines | Line breaks plus one, so a single line with no break is 1 | 1 |
Line breaks and trailing newlines
Lines are counted by splitting on the newline character, so a text that ends with a line break reports one more line than you might expect: 'Hello world' followed by Enter shows 2 lines, 12 characters with spaces and 10 without. Three blank lines between two words produce 4 lines and 4 characters of whitespace.
Text copied from Windows programs sometimes carries a carriage return before each newline. Both characters are included in the With spaces total, and both are stripped from the Without spaces total, because the carriage return is whitespace too.
Emoji and accented letters
Counting is done in UTF-16 code units, the way JavaScript measures strings. For the Latin alphabet, digits and common punctuation that is one unit per character, but anything outside the Basic Multilingual Plane takes two units, and composed sequences take more.
Platforms do not all count this way. Some count a whole emoji as one character, others as two, and some weight East Asian scripts double. For a hard limit on a specific site, treat this count as the upper bound and test the real field.
| Input | With spaces | Note |
|---|---|---|
| é (typed as one key) | 1 | Precomposed letter |
| e + combining acute accent | 2 | Looks identical, but two code points were typed |
| 😀 | 2 | One emoji above U+FFFF |
| 👍🏽 | 4 | Thumbs up plus a skin-tone modifier |
| 🇬🇧 | 4 | Flags are two regional indicator symbols |
| 日本語 | 3 | CJK characters are one unit each |
Character limits worth knowing
Title tags and meta descriptions are cut by pixel width rather than a fixed count, so the usual advice of about 60 and 155 characters is a guideline, not a rule enforced by the counter.
| Field | Limit (characters) |
|---|---|
| X post (standard account) | 280 |
| Instagram bio | 150 |
| Instagram caption | 2,200 |
| LinkedIn post | 3,000 |
| LinkedIn About section | 2,600 |
| Google Ads headline | 30 |
| Google Ads description | 90 |
| Single SMS | 160 (GSM alphabet) or 70 if it contains an emoji or non-Latin letter |
When the without-spaces figure matters
- Translation and transcription agencies sometimes price per 1,000 characters without spaces, a common convention in European markets.
- Some school assignments and legal forms set a limit excluding spaces, which is usually about 15 to 18 percent lower than the with-spaces count for English prose.
- Password and username fields reject spaces entirely, so the without-spaces figure is the one that has to fit.
Frequently asked questions
Does the count include spaces?
We show both totals: characters including spaces and characters excluding spaces, updated live as you type.
Does a tab or a line break count as a character?
In the With spaces total, yes: each tab and each newline adds one. In the Without spaces total they are removed along with ordinary spaces.
Why does one emoji add 2 to the count?
The counter measures UTF-16 code units, and emoji outside the basic plane need two of them. Emoji with skin tones or flags are built from several code points and add 4 or more.
Can I count letters only, ignoring punctuation?
Not directly. The Without spaces figure still includes punctuation and digits, so for a letters-only count you would subtract those by hand.
