The second column shows the key difference between the two capitalising modes: Title Case and Sentence case lowercase everything first, so brand names and acronyms lose their capitals, while Capitalize Each Word only touches the first letter of each word and leaves the rest exactly as typed.

Which words Title Case keeps lowercase

Title Case keeps 17 short words in lowercase unless they come first: a, an, and, as, at, but, by, for, in, of, on, or, the, to, with, nor and via. Everything else gets a capital, including each part of a hyphenated word, so 'well-known state-of-the-art tools' becomes 'Well-Known State-of-the-Art Tools'. Words are only exempt when they appear in that list; verbs like 'is' and 'be' are capitalised, which matches most style guides.

A word containing an apostrophe is treated as one word, so 'don't stop me now' becomes 'Don't Stop Me Now'.

How Sentence case finds the sentences

After lowercasing the whole text, Sentence case capitalises the first letter of the text and any letter that follows a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark plus whitespace. 'hello. i went to paris. did you?' becomes 'Hello. I went to paris. Did you?'. Note two consequences: the pronoun 'i' is only capitalised when it starts a sentence, and a new line that does not follow closing punctuation stays lowercase, because a line break alone is not treated as a sentence boundary.

Quirks to know before you click

  • Capitalize Each Word treats an apostrophe as part of the word, so 'don't' becomes 'Don't' and 'O'Neil's' becomes 'O'Neil's'. A hyphen does start a new word: 'well-known' becomes 'Well-Known', which is what most style guides want in a heading.
  • All six modes work on letters from any alphabet. 'école normale' becomes 'École Normale' in Title Case, 'über alles' becomes 'Über Alles', and Sentence case capitalises an accented first letter the same way. Scripts without upper and lower case, such as Arabic or Chinese, pass through unchanged.
  • aLtErNaTiNg counts every character including spaces and punctuation, starting lowercase at the first character. Because spaces take a turn, the pattern can shift between words: 'hello world' gives 'hElLo wOrLd'.
  • Each button replaces the text in the box, and there is no undo button. Keep the original somewhere else if you may need it again, since Title Case cannot restore capitals that lowercase removed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between title case and sentence case?

Title case capitalises the first letter of most words, while sentence case only capitalises the first letter of each sentence.

Why did my acronyms turn into ordinary words?

Title Case and Sentence case lowercase the text before capitalising, so NASA becomes Nasa. Run Capitalize Each Word instead when the text already has the capitals you want to keep.

Can I convert only part of the text?

No. Every button converts the whole box. Paste just the fragment you want to change, convert it, and copy it back into your document.

Does it handle text in other alphabets?

UPPERCASE and lowercase work on any script that has case, including Greek and Cyrillic. The other four modes detect word starts using unaccented Latin letters and digits only, so a word beginning with an accented or non-Latin character is either left lowercase or, in Title Case and Capitalize Each Word, capitalised on its second letter.
