Decimal units with the byte as the base

This converter uses the SI meaning of the prefixes, where each step is a factor of 1,000, as laid down in IEC 80000-13 and used by drive manufacturers, network standards and macOS. The binary units kibibyte, mebibyte, gibibyte and tebibyte (powers of 1,024) are not in the dropdowns, so if you need those you divide by hand as shown below.

Decimal versus binary prefixes

Windows Explorer, many Linux tools and older documentation label powers of 1,024 with the same letters, which is why a drive sold as 2 TB shows up as about 1.81 TB. Convert the figure to bytes here (2,000,000,000,000) and divide by 1,099,511,627,776 to get 1.819 TiB. A 256 GB phone is 238.42 GiB by the same arithmetic, and a 4.7 GB DVD holds 4.3772 GiB.

Bits and bytes in the same table

A bit is stored with a factor of 0.125, so eight bits make one byte. The bit row is the one to use for internet speeds, which are quoted in megabits per second while downloads are reported in megabytes: 100 Mb is 12.5 MB, 500 Mb is 62.5 MB, and 1 GB is 8,000,000,000 bits. Because both sides are per second, a 100 Mbps line moves at most 12.5 MB/s. The converter does not estimate download times; divide the file size in megabytes by the MB/s figure yourself.

What the rounding does to very small and very large results

1,536 MB in gigabytes is 1.536, printed with four decimals because it lies between 1 and 100.
One byte in petabytes is 0.000000000000001, far below the six-decimal display, so the table shows 0. One bit in gigabytes shows 0 for the same reason.
1 PB in bits is 8,000,000,000,000,000 and is printed in full with digit grouping, never in scientific notation.
Separators follow your browser locale, so 1,000,000 may appear as 1.000.000 or 1 000 000.

Everyday figures

A 25 MB email attachment limit is 25,000 KB or 25,000,000 bytes.
A 15 GB free cloud quota is 15,000 MB; a 3.5 MB photo is 3,500 KB, so around 4,285 of them fit.
A 1 TB drive is 1,000 GB on the box and 931.32 GiB once the operating system counts in binary.
A 50 GB 4K film is 400,000,000,000 bits, which at 100 Mb/s takes about 67 minutes to download at full rate.

Frequently asked questions

How many MB are in a GB?

Using decimal (SI) units, 1 gigabyte equals 1,000 megabytes. Some systems use binary units where 1 GB = 1,024 MB; this converter uses the decimal standard.

Is 1 GB equal to 1000 MB or 1024 MB?

It depends on the standard. Storage manufacturers and SI use 1 GB = 1,000 MB. Operating systems often use 1 GB = 1,024 MB (technically gibibytes). This tool uses the 1,000-based decimal standard.

Can I convert to kibibytes, mebibytes or gibibytes here?

Not directly; the dropdowns only have decimal units. Convert to bytes, then divide by 1,024, 1,048,576 or 1,073,741,824 for KiB, MiB or GiB.

How many bits are in a megabyte?

8,000,000. A megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes and each byte is 8 bits, which the bit row of the table shows when you enter 1 MB.

Why does my 1 TB drive show as 931 GB on the computer?

The drive holds 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, but Windows divides by 1,073,741,824 (a gibibyte) and labels the result GB, giving 931.32. Nothing is missing.

Does Mbps mean megabytes or megabits?

Megabits per second. Use the Bits row: 100 Mb equals 12.5 MB, so a 100 Mbps connection delivers at most 12.5 megabytes each second.
