“Free video editor” usually comes with a catch — a watermark stamped across your export, a time limit, or a nag screen. These three don’t. Each is genuinely free and exports clean video.
1. DaVinci Resolve — the professional one
DaVinci Resolve is used on real film and TV productions, and Blackmagic Design offers a free version for Mac, Windows and Linux. It’s the most capable tool here by far, covering editing, colour, audio and effects. The trade-off: it’s demanding, so you’ll want a reasonably powerful computer.
2. Shotcut — light and open source
Shotcut is “a free, open source, cross-platform video editor.” It’s far lighter than Resolve, supports up to 4K, and is a friendly place to learn the basics of timeline editing without spending anything.
3. Kdenlive — the KDE editor
Kdenlive, maintained by KDE, is another free and open-source editor that runs on Linux, Windows and macOS. It strikes a nice balance between Shotcut’s simplicity and Resolve’s depth.
