Why your iPhone photos are HEIC

Since iOS 11 in 2017, iPhones have saved photos as HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) by default. It builds on the same compression technology as HEVC video and stores a photo at roughly half the size of an equivalent JPG, which adds up when a phone takes thousands of pictures a year.

The catch is compatibility. Apple devices open HEIC natively, as do most Android phones from Android 9 onwards, but many websites, online forms, older Windows PCs and photo-printing services still accept only JPG or PNG. On Windows, viewing HEIC typically requires Microsoft's HEIF and HEVC extensions from the Microsoft Store.

Stop the problem at the source

To make the iPhone camera shoot JPG from now on: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. The trade-off is larger files.
To keep HEIC on the phone but get JPGs on a computer: Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic. Photos copied over a cable are then converted as they transfer.
Sharing from the Photos app into other apps often converts automatically, so HEIC files usually turn up via AirDrop, attachments sent as files and cloud-storage downloads.

What the JPG keeps and what it leaves behind

The missing capture date is the one to watch. Photo libraries that sort by date taken will file converted JPGs under the day you converted them, so if dates matter, keep the HEIC originals alongside the JPGs.

Is the JPG much bigger than the HEIC?

Usually, yes — often one and a half to two times the size at similar quality, because JPG compression is less efficient. Lower the quality slider to around 80% if the file needs to be small.

Can I convert several HEIC photos at once?
