How to Calculate a Tip

Tipping is simple once you know the trick: find 10% and scale from there. Use the calculator below for an exact split, or do it in your head with the method here.

The quick mental method

  • Find 10% by moving the decimal one place left (e.g. $46 → $4.60).
  • For 20%, double it ($9.20). For 15%, take 10% plus half of it ($4.60 + $2.30 = $6.90).
  • Add the tip to the bill, then divide by the number of people to split it.

How much should you tip?

In the US, 15–20% is standard for table service, more for great service. Customs vary by country, so check local norms when travelling.

Tip on the pre-tax amount if you like, though many people just use the total for simplicity.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a 20% tip?

Find 10% of the bill (move the decimal one place left) and double it. On a $46 bill, 10% is $4.60, so 20% is $9.20.

How do I split the bill with a tip?

Add the tip to the total, then divide by the number of people. The calculator above does this for you.

Should I tip on the total or pre-tax amount?

Either is fine. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is slightly lower; many people just use the total for convenience.
