The three numbers and how they are produced

Tip = bill × percent ÷ 100. Total = bill + tip. Per person = total ÷ number of people. With the starting values, a 50 bill at 18% split two ways gives a 9 tip, a 59 total and 29.5 each.

Rounding and why the shares may not add up

Amounts are rounded to two decimal places for display, and trailing zeros are dropped, so 29.50 shows as 29.5. The per-person figure is rounded on its own, not forced to reconcile with the total: a 100 bill at 15% split three ways gives 38.33 each, and three times 38.33 is 114.99, one cent short of the 115 total. In practice one person pays the extra cent, or everyone rounds up.

No currency symbol is shown, so the calculator works just as well for dollars, euros, pounds or any other currency, and for a bill of 8.50 or 1,250.

Slider and preset behaviour

The slider moves in whole percentages, so 12.5% or 17.5% cannot be selected. Tapping a preset jumps the slider to that value and highlights the button; dragging the slider to a value that is not a preset leaves all buttons unhighlighted. Sliding to 0% turns the page into a plain bill splitter: the tip reads 0, the total equals the bill, and the per-person box shows an even split.

What happens with unusual inputs

• A bill of 0, or an empty bill field, hides the result boxes.
• A people value of 0, a negative number or an empty field is treated as 1, so you still see a total and a per-person figure.
• The people field only counts whole people: a typed 2.5 is read as 2, so the split is always by a whole number.
• A maximum of 30% applies to the slider; for a larger tip, work out the amount with the percentage calculator instead.

Larger groups

Doubling the group halves the share, so the quickest way to sanity-check the per-person box is to divide the total by the headcount in your head. If a restaurant adds an automatic gratuity for groups of six or more, set the slider to 0% and let the per-person box split the bill as printed.

Service charges, tax and rounding to a nice number

• If the bill already includes a service charge, slide the tip to 0% or to a small top-up rather than tipping twice.
• To tip on the pre-tax amount, enter the subtotal from the receipt rather than the final line.
• To land on a round total, nudge the slider one step at a time and watch the Total box: on a 46 bill, 20% gives 55.2 while 22% gives 56.12.
• When paying by card, the per-person figure is what each person should put on their own card if the restaurant splits the payment.
