How to remove the location from a photo

Choose a JPG photo — the format phones and cameras use when they record location.
The tool reads the photo's EXIF data and shows whether GPS coordinates are present, and what they are.
It then creates a clean copy with the location and all other EXIF data removed, saved at 95% quality.
Download the clean copy and share that one; the original on your device is left as it was.

How GPS coordinates are stored in a photo

When location tagging is on, the camera app writes the position into the photo's EXIF data as degrees, minutes and seconds, plus a reference letter for north or south and east or west. The tool converts that into the decimal format map apps use: decimal degrees = degrees + minutes ÷ 60 + seconds ÷ 3600. For example, 59° 19′ 45.6″ N works out to 59 + 0.3167 + 0.0127 = 59.3293°.

Many phones record altitude, the direction the camera was facing and a GPS timestamp alongside the coordinates. All of it is removed together with the rest of the EXIF data.

How precise is the location in a photo?

Phones outdoors are typically accurate to within a few metres and store coordinates with more than enough decimal places to pinpoint a home. That's why a photo of a new sofa, a pet or a car on the driveway can reveal an address as clearly as a photo of the house itself.

Turn off location tagging for future photos

iPhone: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Camera → Never.
Android: open the Camera app's settings and turn off the option called Location tags, Save location or similar — the name varies by manufacturer.
Or leave it on: location in your own photo library is useful for maps and memories. The risk is only in sharing the original file, so clean the copies you send.

Frequently asked questions

Do my photos really contain my location?

Often yes. Phones embed GPS coordinates in the photo's EXIF data, which can reveal exactly where it was taken. This tool shows you and removes it.

How do I remove location from a photo?

Does it remove other private data too?

Yes — re-encoding the image also strips other EXIF metadata like camera model and timestamps.

Is it private?

Completely. Everything runs in your browser; the photo is never uploaded.

Does this work with iPhone HEIC photos?

This tool reads JPG files. For a HEIC photo, run it through the HEIC to JPG converter first — the converted JPG doesn't carry the original's EXIF data, so the location is already gone.

The tool found no location — is my photo safe to share?

If no GPS data is found, the file holds no coordinates in its EXIF data. The picture itself can still give a place away, though: street signs, house numbers, landmarks and the view from a window are worth checking before you share.

Do screenshots contain GPS data?

Normally not — screenshots are created by the operating system rather than the camera, so they don't include location. They can still show private details on screen, which you can hide with the Blur Sensitive Information tool.
