How to resize a photo for WhatsApp

  1. Choose the photo you want as your profile picture or status.
  2. Pick Profile photo (640 × 640), Status (1080 × 1920) or the small 192 × 192 square.
  3. Use Crop to fill for a profile picture so the square is filled edge to edge; use Fit for a status if you want the whole photo visible with bars above and below.
  4. Download the JPG, then set it as your profile photo in WhatsApp's settings or post it as a status.

Your profile photo is shown as a circle

WhatsApp stores the profile picture as a square but displays it as a circle in chats, contact lists and group info. The corners are hidden: a circle inside a square covers only about 79% of its area. Keep your face in the middle of the frame with some space around your head, and nothing important in the corners.

In the chat list the picture is barely a centimetre across, so a clear face against a plain background reads far better than a group shot or a detailed landscape.

How WhatsApp compresses photos

Photos sent in chats are recompressed to save data, which reduces both resolution and quality. Since 2023 WhatsApp has offered an HD option when sending photos, which keeps noticeably more resolution; the standard setting is smaller and softer. Sending a photo as a document skips compression entirely and delivers the original file, metadata included.

Resizing before you send gives WhatsApp less to change. A 1080 × 1920 status image already has the shape the app displays, so it isn't awkwardly cropped, and fine detail such as text survives recompression better.

Status posts: sizes and timing

  • Photo statuses fill the screen best at 9:16 — 1080 × 1920 pixels.
  • A status disappears after 24 hours, and only the contacts allowed by your status privacy setting can see it.
  • Text placed very close to the top or bottom edge can be covered by the viewer's name, timestamp and reply bar.
  • Landscape photos appear small in the middle of the screen; converting them to 9:16 with Fit or Crop to fill lets you decide how they're framed.

Group icons and WhatsApp Business

Group icons behave exactly like profile pictures: a square shown as a circle, very small in the chat list. A bold symbol, a logo or a single face works far better than a group photo in which everyone ends up a few pixels tall.

For a WhatsApp Business profile, a square logo with generous padding survives the circular crop best. Keep lettering large and avoid thin fonts, which blur at small sizes.
