Why you keep ending up with WebP files
Most large websites now serve images as WebP because it saves bandwidth. When you right-click and save an image from a web page, or save a picture from an image search, you often get the WebP the site actually delivered — even though the page never mentioned the format.
That's fine for viewing, but it can trip you up later: some older desktop software, printing kiosks, online forms and messaging features still expect JPG or PNG. Adobe Photoshop, for example, only gained built-in WebP support in 2022. Converting to JPG removes that friction.
What changes when a WebP becomes a JPG
- Transparency is flattened. JPG can't store transparent pixels, so see-through areas become solid white.
- Animation is lost. An animated WebP turns into a single still frame.
- The file may get bigger. WebP is the more efficient format, so the same picture at similar quality usually takes more bytes as JPG; lowering the quality slider brings it back down.
- Metadata doesn't come across, because the JPG is built from the pixels alone.
- The pixel dimensions stay exactly the same.
Choosing the JPG quality
Converting can't restore detail the WebP already lost. If the WebP was heavily compressed, a 100% JPG simply preserves those flaws in a larger file, so around 90% is the sensible ceiling.

Converting on your computer instead
If you'd rather not use a website at all: on Windows, recent versions of Paint can open a WebP and save it as JPG; on a Mac, open the file in Preview and choose File → Export, then JPEG. Why does my converted JPG have a white background?
The WebP had transparent areas. JPG can't store transparency, so those parts are filled with white. If the background needs to stay see-through, keep the file as WebP or convert it to PNG instead.
Will upload forms that rejected the WebP accept the JPG?
In almost every case, yes — JPG is the format forms are built around. If a form also has a size limit, run the JPG through one of the Compress Image to 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB or 1 MB tools afterwards.
