How to generate a cover letter

  1. Enter your name, the job title you are applying for and the company. All three are optional but make the letter specific.
  2. Choose a tone: professional, enthusiastic, formal or friendly.
  3. Describe your background, skills and why you fit, in up to 2,000 characters. This box is required.
  4. Press Generate cover letter. Edit the result in the box that appears, then Copy it or use Print / PDF.

This is an AI tool: what the model is asked to do

The letter is written by a large language model, not assembled from templates. Your background text and the three short fields are sent to the site's server, which holds a fixed instruction set and forwards the request to open-weight models hosted on Groq's free tier (currently a chain that starts with gpt-oss-120b and falls back to smaller models when one is unavailable). The instruction asks for a complete, ready-to-send letter: a brief greeting, two or three tight paragraphs linking your background to the role, and a polite closing, with no invented facts, no filler and no placeholders unless your name is missing. It also tells the model to reply in the language of your input.

Sampling is set to a moderate temperature, so pressing Regenerate gives a noticeably different letter from the same input rather than the same one again. Output is capped at about 700 tokens, roughly 500 words, which is longer than a cover letter should be anyway.

What the four tones change

ToneEffect on the letter
ProfessionalNeutral business register; the default and the safest for most applications
EnthusiasticWarmer openings, more emphasis on motivation for this company
FormalReserved phrasing suited to law, finance, government and academia
FriendlyConversational sentences for start-ups and creative roles

Writing a background that gets a good letter

  • Lead with years of experience and your current title, then two or three concrete results with numbers: grew newsletter sign-ups from 2,000 to 9,500 in a year, cut support backlog by 40%.
  • Paste the three or four requirements from the job advert that you meet, in your own words, so the model can mirror them.
  • Say why this company: a product you use, a recent launch, a value you share. Generic praise produces a generic letter.
  • Mention practicalities that belong in a letter: notice period, relocation, visa status.
  • Stay under 2,000 characters; the counter under the box turns red when you pass that, because anything beyond it is cut off before the model sees it.

Editing, copying and printing

The generated text lands in an editable box in a serif face, and every edit is kept. Copy puts the plain text on the clipboard for pasting into an email or an application form. Print / PDF hides the form and prints only the letter, so Save as PDF in the dialog gives you a clean one-page file. The letter has no address block or date; add them in the box if the employer wants a traditional layout.

Your name, the role, the company, the tone, the background and the current letter are all stored in this browser's local storage, so the draft is still there tomorrow. Nothing is stored on the server; the request is forwarded and the reply returned.

Limits and honest caveats

  • Your name is kept to 80 characters and the job title and company to 120 each before they reach the model; longer entries are cut at those points.
  • Each visitor can make 12 requests per minute, and the free model quota is shared by everyone, so at busy times you may see a message asking you to try again shortly.
  • If the site has no AI key configured, the button returns a clear error and nothing else works.
  • Models can still generalise or over-claim despite the instruction. Check that every fact, title and company name in the letter is right before sending.
  • There is no field for pasting a full job description; summarise the relevant parts into the background box instead.

Frequently asked questions

Is the cover letter generator free?

Yes. You can generate, edit, and download as many cover letters as you like for free — no account or sign-up needed.

Can I edit the cover letter after it's generated?

Absolutely. The generated letter appears in an editable box, so you can fine-tune any wording before you copy it or save it as a PDF.

Is my information private?

Your details are saved only in your browser. Only the background text you enter is sent to generate the letter — nothing is stored on our servers.

Which AI writes the letter?

Open-weight models served by Groq, currently gpt-oss-120b with smaller fallbacks. The site sends a fixed prompt plus your text; it does not train anything on your data.

Can I paste the whole job description?

Only up to 2,000 characters of background text are used, so paste the key requirements rather than the full advert, and leave room for your own strengths.

Why did I get a message saying the AI is busy or at its limit?

Either you sent more than 12 requests in a minute, or the shared free quota ran out for the moment. Wait a minute and press Generate again.

Does it work in languages other than English?

Yes. The model is instructed to answer in the language of your background text, so write the background in Spanish or Arabic to get a letter in that language.
