Frequently asked questions

How do I remove VAT from a gross price?

Divide the gross price by 1 plus the VAT rate. For 20% VAT, divide by 1.20 to get the net price, then subtract it from the gross to find the VAT.

How do I add VAT to a net price?

Multiply the net price by the VAT rate to get the VAT amount, then add it to the net. For 20% VAT on 100, the VAT is 20 and the gross total is 120.

Why can't I just subtract 20% to remove VAT?

Because the VAT was calculated on the smaller net amount, not the gross. Subtracting 20% from a 120 gross gives 96, but the correct net is 120 ÷ 1.20 = 100. Always divide by 1 plus the rate.

What are common standard VAT rates?

Standard rates vary by country — for example 5% in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, 19% in Germany, 20% in the UK and France, 21% in Spain and the Netherlands, and 25% in Sweden and Denmark. Many countries also have reduced rates for specific goods, so check the official rate for your case.
